7 Chakras for Beginners - Complete Guide
the 7 chakras for beginner’s - complete guide
If you’ve ever attended a yoga class, meditation session, or ventured to a crystal shop, you may have heard about the seven chakras. But what are “chakras”?
In Sanskrit, “chakra” literally means wheel or disk. In the spiritual sense, chakras are defined as the seven wheel-like energy centers existing in the subtle body that integrate our mind, body, and soul.
Chakras are based on the universal truth that everything is energy. Within the chakras is ‘prana’, the ultimate life force that exists within all of us. Chakras can be open, closed, under active, or over active, impacting how we behave, how we feel emotionally and spiritually, and our physical well-being.
Spiritual practices such as yoga, meditation, and reiki, strive to open and align all of the chakras so that our life energy (prana) can flow through us. When the chakras are aligned, we feel balanced, healthy, and as one with the universe.
What are the seven chakras?
Root Chakra (Muladhara)
Location: Base of spine
What it is: The root chakra is the foundation of the chakra system. It is responsible for our survival, security, and grounding in the physical world. This includes solid, earthly things such as our bodies, food, water, money, shelter, and material essentials for survival. The root chakra ultimately keeps us grounded and connected to the Earth in material existence.
The root chakra is also where Kundalini energy resides.
When it’s under active: If your root chakra is under active, you may feel disconnected from the physical world or from your body. You may feel disorganized, unable to focus, and lack discipline. In turn, you may struggle with financial stability and attaining the material essentials needed to live safely. You may also have issues with body acceptance or keeping your body properly nourished.
When it’s overactive: If your root chakra is overactive, you may be materialistic, greedy, or resistant to change. You may experience feelings of anxiousness, fear, or paranoia. These feelings are your body's way of coping for survival and protection of the self. You may also believe that your self-worth is dependent on material items or your job.
When it’s balanced: When your root chakra is balanced, you feel safe and secure in your physical space and at peace within your body.
Sacral Chakra (Svadhishana)
Location: Lower abdomen between navel and genitals
What it is: The sacral chakra (aka the fun chakra!) is the key to your creative energy, including your emotions, sensations, and sexuality. It is the driving force of pleasure, which enables us to tune into our senses, helping us feel more connected and lively.
When it’s under active: When your sacral chakra is under active, you may be all about that work hard, no play life. You aren’t allowing yourself to enjoy the simple pleasures of life or doing the activities that make you feel energized and truly alive. If you’re a type A kind of person, you may be always wanting to control things and feeling the need to plan ev-er-y-th-in-g. You may also be lacking creativity and passion, resulting in feelings of sluggishness and emptiness. You may have a low sex drive or be shameful of your sexuality.
When it’s overactive: Where are all my drama queens at!? Your sacral chakra may be overactive if you’re finding yourself to be a bit of a drama queen and feeling waaay too emotional. You may be feeling overwhelmed or obsessive, and may be experiencing addictions to people or things (or sex, lol).
When it’s balanced: When your sacral chakra is balanced, you feel passionate, energized, creative, and comfortable in your own skin. You enjoy the simple pleasures of life and experience a creative flow of energy that makes you feel ALIVE.
Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura)
Location: Center of abdomen
What it is: The solar plexus chakra is all about personal power. Represented by the element of fire, this chakra is all about igniting our inner drive, including our willpower and ability to make shit happen.
When it’s under active: If your solar plexus chakra is under active, you may be experiencing low levels of self-confidence and self-esteem. You may have trouble making decisions, find yourself constantly procrastinating, or feeling victim to your outside circumstances.
When it’s overactive: If you are constantly striving for perfection and are overly critical of yourself, your sacral plexus chakra may be in overdrive. Feeling a strong desire to be in control of every little thing or overly stubborn and competitive can also be warning signs of an overactive solar plexus. Eating disorders can also manifest when the solar plexus chakra is in overdrive.
When it’s balanced: When your solar plexus chakra is balanced, you willpower is strong, you feel confident in who you truly are, and you feel in control of your reality. Basically, you feel like a bada** that can take on the world.
Heart Chakra (Anahata)
Location: Directly above the heart
What it is: The heart chakra, also known as the loooooovvvveee chakra. The heart chakra is the central chakra that draws everything together as one. It brings together compassion and kindness, which then radiates outward to unify all of existence (all about those good vibes only).
When it’s under active: Your heart chakra may be under active if you are lacking empathy towards others, or are quick to judge people based on outside perception. You may also have a difficult time letting people in emotionally, and feel that you are undeserving of love or human connection.
When it’s overactive: “Got me looking so crazy right now, your love's got me looking so crazy right now…” If Crazy in Love by Beyonce is your anthem right now, your heart chakra may be overactive. Signs of an overactive heart chakra include feeling obsessive or overly clingy in a relationship, losing your sense of identity in another person, or feeling extremely emotional in any given situation.
When it’s balanced: When your heart chakra is balanced, you feel as one with the universe and everyone around you. You feel compassion for all living creatures, receptive to love from others, and you have unceasing love for yourself. You perceive the world in its unity, not separation.
Throat Chakra (Vishuddha)
Location: Center of throat
Element: Ether (also known as “Akasha”, or spirit)
What it is: The throat chakra is all about communication – speaking, listening, writing, chanting, singing – transmitting and receiving information. Communication enables us to express ourselves fully and connect with others. When communication is open and expansive, we decrease separateness and boundaries, and instead arrive at unity.
When it’s under active: If you are having trouble expressing who you are or speaking your truth, your throat chakra may be blocked. You may be worried about what others think of you and you are afraid of judgement. You may also have a hard time communicating your needs or desires, leaving you to feel misunderstood or insignificant.
When it’s overactive: Being too outspoken, judgmental, or overly opinionated can be signs of an overactive throat chakra. If you’re constantly gossiping about others, or talking to others in a condescending way, you definitely need to get your throat chakra in check.
When it’s balanced: When your throat chakra is balanced, you freely express your truth! You feel comfortable expressing who you are and what you believe in, and you don’t fear judgement from others. You are careful to listen to other people and accept who they uniquely are.
Third Eye Chakra (Ajna)
Location: Center of the brow
What it is: The third eye chakra holds the essence of seeing, both inner and outer. The third eye sees beyond the material world, bringing us deeper insight and understanding. It allows creative visualization, or holding images in our minds which then materialize into our reality.
The third eye chakra is related to the pineal gland, a pea-shaped gland located in the center of the brain. The pineal gland releases Melatonin, a hormone that regulates our sleep and circadian rhythms (wake and sleep cycle). Recent studies have found that the molecular structure of Melatonin is very similar to DMT (Dimethyltryptamine), a molecule found in psychedelic drugs. The difference is just one carbon atom and two oxygen atoms.
So does the pineal gland have a mystical, spiritual function that is waiting to be awakened?
Who knows. But for now, the third eye chakra.
When it’s under active: At some point of our lives, we have all asked the question, “what is the purpose of life?” Perfectly normal question to ask. But if you feel like you lack purpose in life, or can’t seem to understand your inner truth, your third eye chakra may be blocked. You may have difficulty getting in touch with your intuition and trusting yourself. An under active third eye chakra can result in depression and anxiety.
When it’s overactive: As humans, we can’t be living in a fantasy world all of the time. The third eye chakra is overactive if you can’t get in touch with reality and the physical world. An overactive third eye can manifest as paranoia, overthinking, narrow-mindedness (typically with religion), inability to switch celestial insight ‘off’, or even hallucinating when sober.
When it’s balanced: When your third eye chakra is balanced, you feel strongly connected to the universe and understand that you are the creator of your reality. You feel a strong sense of intuition, inner trust, and you experience higher levels of consciousness.
Crown Chakra (Sahaswara)
Location: Top of head
What it is: Finally, the seventh chakra. The crown chakra, known in Sanskrit as "Sahaswara", means “thousand petaled lotus”. It is the ultimate connection to divine intelligence and infinite awareness. This chakra allows us to expand beyond our self, space, time, and the accumulated information stored in our minds. The crown chakra enables us to experience transcendent bliss.
When it’s under active: If you feel that all of life is meaningless and that you lack purpose here in the universe, your crown chakra is under active. You may be entirely dismissive of spirituality, lack desire to explore the inner self, and are fearful of death.
When it’s overactive: If you are soooo obsessed with spirituality and transcending to a higher level of consciousness, your crown chakra is overactive! This can cause you to lose a sense of grounding with the physical world. Other signs of an overactive crown chakra include feelings of superiority over all other beings, judgement against others, and an inability to carry out normal living in the physical space.
When it’s balanced: When your crown chakra is balanced, you feel connected to the divine and your inner self. You understand that you are a force of energy, the same force that is within every other human being, every plant, every animal, every single thing in the universe. You know that what you are, is life.
It is important to remember that the chakras do not function by themselves. The chakras function as a system, one affecting the other. They need to be balanced with each other to allow energy to flow freely.
When the chakras are aligned, we are the highest version of ourselves.
